  • The Sustainability of Very High Needs Primary Care Practices in a Capitated Environment

    A report recently commissioned by the National Hauora Coalition (NHC) examining the sustainability of general practices with ‘very high-needs’ populations in a capitated environment points to the higher costs and challenges of providing care to predominantly ‘high-needs’ groups.

    A report recently commissioned by the National Hauora Coalition (NHC) examining the sustainability of general practices with ‘very high-needs’ populations in a capitated environment points to the higher costs and challenges of providing care to predominantly ‘high-needs’ groups.

    The report compared data from 26 General Practices and found that very ‘high-needs’ practices have higher than average patient turnover, higher than average fee-for-service deductions, and a much smaller percentage of revenue generated from patient co-payments. It is suggested that these factors result in persistent challenges to the sustainability of these very ‘high-needs’ practices.

    The report concludes by suggesting that the answers to meeting the challenge of appropriately subsidising patient care for individual ‘high-needs’ patients as well as maintaining primary care practice sustainability lies in considering the total funding environment rather than individual funding streams, such as VLCA, in isolation from other parts of the funding system.

    Online real time forms engine integrated into existing General Practice Management Systems (MedTech-32, MedTech Evolution and MyPractice).

    Including features such as demand management (live budgets), eligibility checks, invoicing, clinical note generation, clinical guidelines adherence and reporting. Key feature was a rules engine with flexibility to delivery again 50+ DHB contracts as well as support the rollout of the NHC's Flexible Funding Pool.
